these are the benches for Hi Blend, a soon to be open organic cafe, here in Honolulu.
the first picture doesn’t really show the length of the reclaimed 1” x 4”s but the longest ones were 22 feet! very illegal to be on the road but my shop is about a mile from the source.
the lumber used to be rough sawn and used as roofing. it was really beat up; had a ton of nails in it, a bit of tar. i had no idea that it would clean up SO nice and be SO interesting to the eyes.
i could be wrong but a short wander through google-land told me that this lumber is antique heart pine. it started yellow-ish, like the home depot stock of now, but over time, exposure to the elements turns the lumber red-ish. gorgeous stuff.
the benches were constructed in four feet sections, which made delivery a snap, and the seats of these benches pop off to use the space underneath as storage. these benches passed my rigorous dry hump test, which is proof of manly sturdiness.
